Mental Health: Let’s Talk About It

May 5, 2018 (Kay Roland)

Hello, ladies! Welcome back to your favorite health and beauty blog, For The Love of Dove! I know that we usually talk about the latest beauty trends, our favorite Dove products, and everything in between, but today I wanted to talk about something a little different— something that I think is hard to talk about, but definitely needs to be talked about.

Mental health.

Society just doesn't seem to hold mental illness to the same caliber it holds physical illness. Especially when it comes to women. Did you know that women are 40% more likely to suffer from a mental illness than men? Even more so when speaking in terms or anxiety and depressive disorders. That’s a hard pill to swallow, huh? That’s why I think it is important to talk about it. It’s important to the girls of For The Love of Dove to create a community, not only for women, but for anyone who feels alone. We have to be willing to speak on these difficult subjects and to draw attention to the stigma that falls upon mental illness.

It is so important to be able to recognize symptoms of mental illness, to talk about it, and to take care of yourself. So, while self-care can certainly be different, depending on who you are, I wanted to share some of my personal tips about self-care for all of you beautiful ladies out there.

1. Talk to someone.

It is so hard to do, but the most important step in self-care is asking for help. And it doesn’t have to be a therapist if you don’t want it to be; it can be your mom, your best friend, your favorite teacher— anyone! There are so many people around you who want to help you, if only you’d give them the chance.

2. Find time for YOU.

Life can get crazy. When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it can really take a toll on your mental health, so make sure you schedule some me-time to help you unwind. I personally recommend a relaxing bubble bath, using Dove’s Purely Pampering Coconut with Jasmine Body Wash. Yeah, it’s supposed to be a body wash, but it gets the job done and smells absolutely incredible!

3. Discover your outlet.

Me-time is great, but, unfortunately, adult responsibilities may not always leave a ton of time for spa days. Fortunately, there are little, less time-consuming ways in which you can help combat your bad mental health days. Find an outlet. Maybe you like writing. Keep a journal. Perhaps you’re a little more on the fidgety side. Keep a stress ball handy. These are just a couple examples of tiny little changes that you can make that may help you feel at ease throughout the day.

As always, thanks for reading. Feel free to contact myself, any other the girls, or even each other to leave remarks, ask questions, or just... talk. We’re here for you.

so many people are. Self-care can be tricky and certainly looks different for everyone, so find what works for you. You won’t regret it.

THREE PRODUCTS DOVE SHOULD INTRODUCE THIS SUMMER

May 2, 2018

Hi, ladies. As spring is in full swing and summer is approaching, everyone is probably buying the latest beauty products to prepare for those hot, sunny days. As a fan of Dove, and the product insider for our blog, I’m always on Dove’s website and social media, keeping track of their new products being released.

Although Dove has an array of skin products for men, women, and baby, there are three seemingly necessary and basic products I was surprised the brand hasn’t created yet...

1. Sunscreen

Dove is all about skin health and maintaining natural beauty. With all of the different lotions created to protect skin, how is it that Dove hasn’t developed a lotion with SPF or a sunscreen yet?

When I went to the health/beauty section in Target, Dove had most of an end cap full of products that seem to be pretty fitting for summer, so I think there’s room for a few bottles of sunscreen too.

2. Lip Balm

When out in the sun, of course sunscreen is a necessity for protecting the skin, but what about the lips? With other skin and hair care brands, such as Aveeno and Burt’s Bees,  putting lip balm in stores, it’s time for Dove to give it a shot as well.

3. Shaving Cream for Women

I saved the best for last. Shaving cream. Come on, Dove! As you can see in any drugstore, or on Dove’s website, the brand has shaving cream for men, but not for women, yet. I direct messaged Dove on Twitter, but I was unfortunately left on “read”. Maybe they are just busy jotting down these ideas for the future!

Working Out Doesn’t Have To Be Gross and Time-Consuming; Let Dove Help You!

March 12, 2018

Hey, little birdies!

It’s Kay again. I hope that everyone’s week is going better than mine is. :-) No need to worry; I’m just a little stressed, as we all can get. Between school, work, and my surprisingly active social life, I feel like I’m drowning some days. Which sucks when I also would love to have time to eat well, sleep more, and exercise. Because those ARE important aspects to healthy living, and that is what I want to focus on today.

Our team here at For The Love of Dove obviously enjoys talking about all the sick ways that Dove products can make you look and feel healthy and beautiful. But we would be doing ourselves and our readers an incredible disservice if we didn’t also talk about all of the other ways that you can look and feel beautiful as well.

So, today, I am going to talk about working out. I know, I know; it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But it IS important, whether we want to admit it or not.

Now, as I mentioned, I, myself, am insanely busy and stressed. Like every other college student in the world, I am trying my best to juggle all of the things that the typical life of a twenty-something has to offer, while staying healthy.

It’s tough.

But since I started college, I have found a simple three-day weekly workout that’s rational and works with my insane schedule, along with some of my favorite Dove products to rejuvenate me afterwards, so I thought that I’d share them with all of you lovely busy bees as well. (Please don’t judge me. I am NOT a hardcore athlete, but these plans do keep me feeling good!)

Day one:
* Treadmill - 15 minutes (You can walk or run— whatever works for you! It’s just a great warm up. Cardio, cardio, cardio!)
* Elyptical - 15 minutes (A little more challenging, but the burn always makes me feel really accomplished afterwards! Haha!)
* 100 crunches (I like to focus on my abs because I want a flatter tummy. If that’s not a concern of yours, switch it out for something like jumping jacks or push-ups! Also, feel free to play with rep amounts; take it at a pace that’s comfortable for you!

Day Two:
* Treadmill - 25 minutes (Step it up!)
* Elyptical - 20 minutes (I apologize in advance. It’s worth it, I promise!
* 100 squats (I also want a bigger but... sue me. Again, if that’s not your area of focus, feel free to switch it out!)

Day Three:
* Treadmill- 20 minutes (It’s the last day, so I like to give myself a bit of a break.)
* Elyptical - 10 minutes (If you thought I’d go easy on your on Day Three and cut this one out, you were wrong. ;) )
* 30 crunches
* 30 squats (I like to do a few of my designated area workouts on the last day, just to finish strong!)

That’s all, folks! Seems easy enough, right?

Three days might not seem like much, but it really keeps me in shape and motivated. Not only do I feel great, but I see results as well! As long as I am conscious about what I eat and how I spend my four days off as well.

If you’re as busy as I am, I totally recommend this routine, just as much as I recommend the following post-workout products!

Go Fresh Cool Moisture Body Wash

Alright, guys. I’ve been using this body was literally for years. Not only is it sulfate-free (I hate sulfate and don’t use it in my hair either), but the cucumber and green tea scent is the epitome of a fresh smell and is EXACTLY what I need after I smell and feel disgusting after a workout.

Cream Oil Shea Butter Body Lotion

After I’ve lathered up and cooled of with my Go Fresh body wash, I immediately follow-up by moisturizing my body head to toe with with super creamy lotion. It’s so thick and it smells AMAZING. It’s honestly perfect for any day of the week, but it especially helps me feel clean and pampered after a sick workout.
Well, lovelies, I hope that you read something you liked in this piece. This routine— the workout and the after care— is one that keeps me healthy and (somewhat) sane in my crazy, hectic life.

Clinical Protection Antiperspirant, Original Clean

Ugh. I love this. I use it when I wake up in the morning and before I go to bed at night, as well as before and after a workout! Like all Dove products, it’s super moisturizing, all while providing clinical strength antiperspirant technology! (I sweat A LOT, so I definitely need it.) I’ve also noticed that it keeps my underarms super soft and lights that typical after-shave darkness!

I’ve realized that nothing is worth sacrificing my mental and physical health, so I started this plan to really help me take care of myself.

I hope that you choose to take care of yourself, too.

Until next time. Stay rad and stay bad.

For The Love of Dove,
Kay

Exfoliating with Dove's Body Polish

March 12, 2018

Hi, ladies! Alison here.

Now that it’s time for spring break, I’m sure you may have at least thought about traveling, hitting up some coastal beaches, or even just buying new trendy clothes to amp up your wardrobe. With spring comes slightly warmer weather (maybe even here in Chicago, depending on the day) and I, too, am starting to buy lighter clothing, so I’m thinking about my skin’s appearance. I am a fan of lighter, fresh scents so I knew that Dove products were perfect for the season, but I didn’t know what I could get that I didn’t already have. I visited Dove’s website to see if they had any new products, and to my luck, they did!

Introducing the new Dove exfoliating body polish! I saw this on display immediately as I walked into the drug store. The body polish comes in three scents - Pomegranate Seeds & Shea Butter, Kiwi Seeds & Aloe, and my selection, Crushed Macadamia & Rice Milk.

I just used this polish for the first time yesterday and I’m amazed at the results. Unlike other body scrubs and exfoliating body washes, my skin really felt smoother and softer. You may be thinking, “why is this important?” but I assure you, exfoliating is not only beneficial for your skin’s health, but this Dove product makes it so much more efficient and fun!

It is recommended that the average person exfoliates their skin two to three times per week, but only about once a week if you have sensitive skin. On the back of the body polish, Dove recommends using the product three to four times per week. Exfoliating gets rid of the dirt, oil, and other impurities that can clog pores, and gets rid of flaky, dead skin. Using Dove’s body polish is a great new way to prepare your skin for the spring season. With it’s simple and fresh scent, creamy texture, and moisturizing ingredients, there is a lot to love about this product. I hope you get to try this product and make it a travel necessity for spring break!
